THE WORLD IS SHAPED BY SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY. THE NEXT SCIENCE MEETS PARLIAMENT IS YOUR CHANCE TO INFLUENCE THE WAY science and technology SHAPES AUSTRALIA.
Experts from across the nation have taken part over the last 20 years, learning about the policy- and decision-making process and connecting with parliamentarians to enhance understanding of how science contributes to Australia’s health, environment, wealth and wellbeing.
You could follow in their footsteps at the 20th Science meets Parliament in 2019. Join us and work alongside passionate and curious colleagues from across the STEM sector towards our mutual mission of enhancing the role, reputation and impact of science and technology in Australia.
As a delegate to this strictly limited event, you’ll have the chance to meet with decision-makers in science, politics and business, and illustrate the power of solving Australia’s big challenges with science – in agriculture, health, space, communications, finance, education, defence, the environment, and more.
This year at Science meets Parliament you’ll learn directly from parliamentarians, chief scientists, senior departmental policymakers, advocacy experts, community engagement specialists, Superstars of STEM, STEM Ambassadors and many others working at the interface of science and politics.
Science meets Parliament has created significant impact over its two-decade lifespan. Outcomes for individuals and organisations include improvements to legislation, support for research centres and institutes in growing areas of scientific strength for Australia, new mechanisms for deeper engagement between federal parliament and science, accelerated career progression, and access to new careers.
Building connections and support for science, technology, engineering and mathematics in Parliament, alongside strong, long-term investment in research and development, will support Australia’s leadership in expanding humanity’s knowledge.
As a delegate to Science meets Parliament, you’ll be supported to share stories of your own work, the work of those in your discipline, and the work being done throughout the STEM sector in Australia. You’ll connect with colleagues from across disciplines to show our nation’s leaders what’s possible when passionate STEM professionals are empowered to do what they do best – find solutions.

Can I change my times on the day?
No. It is not possible to shift meeting times. Parliamentarians’ diaries can be booked months in advance, and times have been allocated based on the parliamentarians’ requests in the registration process.
Can I organise additional meetings with parliamentarians for the day?
No. This is based on previous feedback from their offices. This has led to confusion about which meeting is the “official” Science meets Parliament meeting. Try for an adjacent day.
Dress Code
Meetings with parliamentarians are formal occasions. Wear a business suit/dress or at least a smart jacket. Jeans, runners and casual attire are not appropriate. The dress code for the Gala Dinner is lounge suit or cocktail dress.
Parliament House is centrally cooled and heated to a constant temperature of 22C.
Can I swap meetings with someone else?
No. STA will have provided your biography to parliamentarians, who receive detailed briefings from their staff before all meetings.
Do I need a mobile phone?
Yes. We may need to contact you urgently during the day. However, you should turn off your phone during all meetings and forums. Mobile phones and cameras are not allowed into the Public Gallery during Question Time.
What should you bring to the meeting?
Take a business card and a simple one-page summary document to leave at the conclusion. Describe your work and its implications (a small professional brochure from your agency/research centre/firm is fine).
Dot points are better than long paragraphs, and it’s a good idea to provide something to illustrate your key point – a simple graph, photo or other small memento (such as a rock sample or a map).
Who will I meet?
Most participants will have a face‐to‐face meeting with a parliamentarian, depending on availability, and some will have meetings with senior policy advisers.
Just prior to the event, participants will receive an email from STA advising which parliamentarian they are scheduled to meet with and the names of other scientists sharing the meeting. Please note that changes to these meetings may occur up until, and including, the actual day of the meeting.
Can STA change my flights?
No. You should arrange this with your travel provider.
Do I need a mobile phone?
Yes. We may need to contact you urgently during the day. However, you should turn off your phone during all meetings and forums. Mobile phones and cameras are not allowed into the Public Gallery during Question Time.
